BACKGROUND INFORMATION OF MUNGER DISTRICT

Munger district is located in the southern part of Bihar and its Headquarters are located at the southern bank of river Ganges. The district is spread over 1419.7 Sq.Km accounting to 3.3% of the area of Bihar. It lies between 240 22’ to 250 .30’ latitude and 850 .30’ to 870 .30’ longitude. On the north side it is surrounded y Khagaria district, on the south and south-west by Jamui and Lakhisarai districts, on the eastern side it is surrounded by Bhagalpur districts and western side by Begusarai and Patna district.
From the administrative and development point of view Munger is divided into three subdivisions namely, Munger, Kharagpur and Tarapur. Three are nine development blocks namely Munger, Bariarpur, Jamalpur, Dharhara, Kharagpur, Tetia Bamber, Tarapur, Asarganj and Sangarampur. For the development purpose, the district has been divided into 127 Panchayats and total numbers of villages are 860 and out of which 506 are inhabited and remaining 354 are uninhabited.
The district comprising the total geographical area of 1,24,816.5 hectares. Most of the villages of the district are connected with roads to different towns and also with district headquarters. The population of the also with district as per 1991 census is 9.43 lacs, out of which 5.08 lacs is male and 4.35 lacs female population. Out of this total population, 1.2 lacs is scheduled caste and 14,553 is schedule tribe. Literacy in the district is 46.72%.
Climate
Munger district is the part of zone III with sub-zone south Bihar plains. The zone is located on south of river Ganges and comprises district of Munger, Bhagalpur, Gaya, Aurangabad, Rohtas, Bhojpur, Patna and Nalanda. It is subhumid and much drier a compared to zone I & III. It has monsoon sub-tropical climate ranging from sub-dry and sub-humid condition. There are three district seasons in this zone viz, summer, monsoon and winter.
Summer (March to May)
The summer season is characterised by gradual rise in temperature occasional thunder shower and hail storm, high velocity westerly during this seasons very dry resulting in sunstroke deaths at times. The maximum temperature rises upto 450C.
Monsoon (June to September)
It starts from middle of June and Continues upto end of September. Monsoon is characterised by cloudy weather, high humidity frequent rains and weak variable surface wind. Maximum rainfall occurs during July and August.
Winter (October to February)
Winter season id characterised by gradual decrease in temperature which comes to minimum in the first week of January. Thereafter, the temperature starts increasing. The minimum temperature varies from 3.50 to 90C.
Rainfall
The rainfall under this zone is mainly influenced by south-west monsoon which sets in second week of June and continues upto whole of September. Sometimes cyclonic rain also occurs. The average annual rainfall of this zone is 1078.7 mm. The rainfall distribution is marked seasonal in character. Greatly limiting water availability in certain time of the year and requiring disposal of excess water in some weeks during monsoon also occur. The average annual rainfall of Munger district is 1146.4 mm (53 years average), out of which 80% is received during monsoon season and the rest ( more than 5%) in summer season. In case of Munger district the temporal variation annual rainfall was recorded a maximum of 2181.6 mm in 1971 and minimum of 481.6 mm in 1972 with annual co-efficient of variation of 27.2%.
July and August received maximum monthly rainfall in the district. The monthly co-efficient of variation of rainfall for monsoon months from June to September was 68.5%, 44.3%, 49.5% and 51.8% respectively for Munger.
Soil
Soil of Munger district is gray to dark gray in colour, medium heavy to heavy in texture, slightly to moderately, alkaline in reaction, cracs during summer ( 1 cm to more than 5 cm wide and more than 50 cm deep) a shallow with onset of monsoon, clay content nearly 40% to 50% throughout the profile. Slicken side along with the wedge shaped structural aggregates absorb soil are found in level land or depression in inundated during rains. The clay minerals found are smectites followed by hydrous Mica. The soil has good fertility status. Diara land soils are light textured well drained with free calcium carbonate (CaCo3) vary between 3 to 8% which seldom exceeds 10%, particularly no genetic low zone give a coars stratification micro relifs, undic moisture regime clay, minerals found are hydrous of sediments deposited in Diara land can be generally stated as those near the streams are coarser in texture i.e. sand which gradually becomes finer with distance a grade to heavy
texture or clay in the central part of the meander, these being always layers of sand at varying department which generally do not go deeper than 40 to 60 cm of surface deported as a result of changing coarse of the current. These Diaras are either.
1. Island between river stream, or
2. The place of the abandoned Dhar in the flood plains.
